Kate's Cupboard

About

Lenoir-Rhyne University opened our food pantry in 2013. While a great resource to students, it was also lacking. It had mostly non perishable items; only food items (no hygiene items, etc.) and was only open during office hours due to the location.

Thanks to Kate Esch '70, LR is now able to significantly expand the food pantry. It was relocated to the Cromer Center where it offers 24/7 access. The new food pantry will have a refrigeration section, allowing us to stock fresh foods in addition to non-perishables, such as milk, eggs, and fresh produce. The pantry will also stock essential personal hygiene items. The pantry will operate with a card swipe system that allows for security and anonymity for users. This system will also allow the university to collect data points needed so that we can better stock the pantry in the future.

"A recent study by the Government Accountability Office revealed that an estimated 23% of college students nationwide experience food insecurity."

“One who is hungry or worried about food cannot live up to their full potential,” said Esch. “I learned of the need to expand access of the food pantry through conversations with Rev. Todd Cutter, campus pastor and director of spiritual life and counseling. Our conversations led to meetings with others concerned, and I felt this was the right time to make a gift that could make the expansion of the food pantry happen.”

The expanded pantry is now open to our students, faculty, and staff. We hope you will join our community in supporting the continued expansion of Kate's Cupboard. We hope to provide simple recipes, cooking demonstrations, and other skills for students that will have a life long impact.
